Unspeakable Joy Devotional

The church. There aren’t many churches anymore with stained glass and steeples, they are becoming a thing of the past. However, I grew up going to a church like this one and have fond memories of it. This church sits just a few miles down the road from where I live and I remain in awe every time I drive by it.

The Bible tells us we need to attend church so we can worship God with other believers and be taught His Word for our spiritual growth. Acts 2:42-47 “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”

Attending church is not just a good “suggestion”; it is God’s will for believers. Church is a place where believers can love one another, encourage one another, “spur” one another to love and good works, serve one another, instruct one another, honor one another, and be kind and compassionate to one another.

When we trust Jesus Christ for salvation, we become a member of the body of Christ. Weekly church attendance is not “required” for believers, but when we belong to Christ, we should have a desire to worship God, receive His Word, and fellowship with other believers.

Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”
