What would Jesus do? How many of us have seen the WWJD that became a popular religious expression on bracelets, necklaces and t-shirts. At first glance, this appears to be a good idea. However, is this something Christians should live by?
Many do not know what Jesus would do because they simply do not know what Jesus did do. They know the stories about His life. Matthew 16:24 “Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” Jesus is about denying oneself, taking up a cross and following Him.
It is also presumptuous of us to believe that we know the mind of Christ: Isaiah 55:8-9 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Maybe instead of asking ourselves What would Jesus do? We should ask ourselves “Jesus, what should I do?” Jesus had a mission and calling higher than ours. We are to follow Jesus and seek to emulate Him, but that may not always mean doing the same thing that He would do.
May we pray that we will do the things it takes to grow closer to Him, and be transformed into one who exhibits the very traits of our loving Creator. The choice must be made by each of us.
