My Help Comes From The Lord. In the song Praise You In This Storm by Casting Crowns-listen to the words “Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord. The maker of heaven and earth.”
Psalm 121 “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved, he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is thy keeper, the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil, he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”
Our help comes from the Lord, the psalmist proclaims. God is constantly vigilant to care for us. Nothing can slip past him to harm us. God’s protection is comprehensive; he guards us from accidents and from diseases both physical and psychological. But here comes the problem. This psalm seems to promise too much. Are we literally given such blanket protection? Obviously not. Christians go out to car crashes and come in to cancer diagnoses every single day. So then, is the psalm false? Obviously not! Generations of believers have found wonderful comfort in the truth of the psalmist’s testimony: “My help comes from the LORD” verse 2. He does protect and preserve me-either from all ills or through them. Nothing “in all creation” can “separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ our Lord” Romans 8:39 “Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (D Bast)
Dear God, Thank you for your reminders that you are surely with us. Thank you that you watch over our coming and going, and that you neither slumber or sleep. Thank you for your constant care, that you are our help and strength in the daily battles that we face. Thank you that you are our Protector and Defender against the schemes of the enemy and the evil that tries to overtake us. We believe that no weapon formed against us will prosper in this life, because you are always greater, and our lives are hidden with Christ. We are safe with You. We choose today to keep our eyes off our problems, and fixed solely on you. We choose to look up, for you alone are our Hope. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
